Hurricane DEAN Advisory No. 1

DEAN STRENGTHENS TO HURRICANE INTENSITY

At 5:00am Today the center of Hurricane Dean was located near Latitude 13.4 North and Longitude 52.3 West or about 780km east of Barbados.

Hurricane Dean is moving toward the West near 40 km/h and this general motion is expected to continue for the next 24 hours.

Maximum sustained winds are 120 km/h with higher gusts and further strengthening is forecast.

Hurricane Dean poses NO IMMEDIATE THREAT to Trinidad and Tobago. However, the general public is advised to monitor the movement of Hurricane Dean through media reports as the Hurricane moves closer to the island of the Eastern Caribbean.

The Trinidad and Tobago Meteorological Services is monitoring this system and will issue an update at 12:00pm. today Thursday, 16th August 2007.

WEATHER CONDITIONS EXPECTED IN TRINIDAD, TOBAGO GRENADA AND ITS DEPENDENCIES ON FRIDAY 17TH AUGUST 2007 ASSOCIATED WITH THE PASSAGE OF HURRICANE DEAN WHOSE CENTRE WILL PASS WELL TO THE NORTH OF THESE ISLANDS.

Trinidad and Tobago would experience showers / thundershowers after midday accompanied by gusty winds up to 50 km/hr.

Grenada and its dependencies should experience Tropical Storm conditions i.e. Heavy showers/thundershowers and sustained winds in excess of 65 km/hr. slowly improving during the afternoon.

There is the likelihood of localized flooding in areas of heavy showery activity.

Rough seas with waves in excess of 4 meters will affect the open waters of these islands.
