Hurricane DEAN Advisory No. 5

FRIDAY, 17th AUGUST 2007

GRENADA AND ITS DEPENDENCIES  UNDER A TROPICAL STORM WARNING

A Tropical Strom Warning continues for the Islands of Grenada and its Dependencies. A Tropical Storm Warning means that Tropical Storm conditions are expected within the warning area……..generally within 24 hours.

At 5:00 a.m. today the center of Hurricane Dean was located near Latitude 14.3 North and Longitude 60.9 West or in the St. Lucia Channel between St. Lucia and Martinique.

Dean is moving towards the west near 39 km/hr and this motion is expected to continue for the next 24 hours. Dean will move away from the Lesser Antilles later today.

Maximum sustained winds are near 160 km/hr with higher gusts. Dean is a category two hurricane on the Saffir Simpson scale. Additional strengthening is forecast during the next 24 hours.

Repeating the 5:00 a.m. position 14.3 N 60.9 W. moving toward the west near 39 km/hr, maximum sustained winds 160 km/hr.

The next advisory will be issued at 12:00 p.m.

WEATHER CONDITIONS EXPECTED IN TRINIDAD, TOBAGO GRENADA AND ITS DEPENDENCIES ON FRIDAY 17TH AUGUST 2007 ASSOCIATED WITH THE PASSAGE OF HURRICANE DEAN WHOSE CENTRE WILL PASS WELL TO THE NORTH OF THESE ISLANDS.

Trinidad and Tobago would experience showers/thundershowers after midday accompanied by gusty winds up to 50 km/hr.

Grenada and its dependencies should experience Tropical Storm conditions i.e. Heavy showers/thundershowers and sustained winds in excess of 65 km/hr. slowly improving during the afternoon.

There is the likelihood of localized flooding in areas of heavy showery activity.

Rough seas with waves in excess of 4 meters will affect the open waters of these islands.
